Okay, I have decided to get serious about fixing up my house now that the holidays are over. So, I thought that the powder room would be a good place to start since it is small. I was a little worried about the painted wallpaper on two walls, but I figured the rest of the wallpaper removal would be a cinch. Ha! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Stinkin’ wallpaper is kicking my butt.
But first, how about a tour of the bathroom in its current state? It is kind of an oddly laid out room, so I took a lot of pictures so that you could understand what was going on.
This is the view from the hallway into the “entry” of the powder room. It is broken up into two separate areas, why I do not know. And that large ugly curtain you are looking at is not a shower like you might think. It’s a large almost floor to ceiling window. Because everyone wants an oversized window next to their toilet, I think we can all agree.
If you look to the right, you will see the doorway into the actual powder room. So, the entry area only consists of a large window and several mirrors. Why? I still don’t know. But, I don’t hate it.
Here is a good look at the mirror/counter primping area(?) inside the powder room.
Here is a look at the wall behind the door. A large full length mirror and a goofy brass hanger made to look like curly brass bamboo live there. I’m pretty sure that the same people who brought us the seashell sconces are to be thanked for the brass bamboo hanger. (As well as this entire gold bathroom travesty.)
Here’s inside the powder room. As you can see, I’ve attempted removing some of the wallpaper and it is not cooperating. Here’s the problem… the top layer of the paper is foil so anything I spray on it just runs off instead of seeping in. We bought a steamer and that helps, but it’s a very slow process. And that’s not even talking about the walls that have been painted over. Painting over wallpaper (especially this wallpaper with a raised, fuzzy pattern and foil underneath) should be a capital offense.
I think what this bathroom needs is a little more sparkle. Or pattern. Or brass fixtures. RIGHT?? Not pictured is the toilet paper dispenser that is… wait for it… BRASS! With dragonflies or something imprinted all over it. Weirdness.
So, this is my project for the next month. Slowly remove the offensive wallpaper. Switch out the brass light fixtures for something less ugly. New curtains, some paint, and this powder room will be a thing of beauty. Although, I would honestly settle for less blinding and garish.
Wish me luck.
