I posted exactly a week ago and said the floors were going to be laid the next day. This was false. Apparently, my handy man has other jobs and can’t just hang out with me and my kitchen all day. So, he started to put the floors down yesterday, and he’s finishing gluing them down today. Then they have to be sealed three times… I’m not sure when the floors will be completely done, but we’re getting close to the end. Of the floors. The rest of the kitchen is still torn up.
I pulled off our old backsplash and tried to do it carefully so that we wouldn’t have to replace the drywall before putting in the subway tile. But, no… I destroyed the drywall. Those tiles were put on for keeps. The drywall ripped all the way through to the pine paneling underneath. But, the guy putting in the floors will patch it for me.
Hello, pine paneling.
I still have to decide if we are capable of installing the backsplash ourselves. Some say yes, some say… Maybe. I’ve watched Youtube videos, and apparently it’s pretty easy, except for the cuts around electrical outlets. But, I have one 6 foot stretch of wall with 5 outlets, which really? A little excessive, methinks. And so that one section scares me greatly.
We worked out the new kitchen layout… This peninsula used to be across from the stove and I hated it so much, I wanted to drench it in gasoline and light it on fire. It completely ruined the kitchen’s flow.
But, over there it will provide storage, in-kitchen dining, and now I don’t have to buy something else to put there instead. So, it’s win-win-win. I’m going to change the countertop to butcher block because that one has 3 burn marks (not from me dowsing it in gasoline like you might think), and I found a cheap replacement at IKEA.
But, this post has taken me so long that since the time I started, he finished the floors. And so ignore all the rest of the crazy going on in here and just focus on these floors that I am in love with and keep rolling around on.
I thought I was ordering 12×12 cork tile, and I actually ordered 1×2 foot tile. Womp womp womp. I felt like barfing when I realized my mistake. But, I’m so glad that I am so much stupider than everyone else who orders floors because that was when I decided that rather than cutting all the tile in half (and hoping that the cuts lined up seamlessly), we could install two 1x2s in the same color next to each other to make 2×2 squares. And I love these 2×2 squares so much. Happy accident. They make the kitchen seem bigger than it actually is.
Here is another thing that makes me ridiculously thrilled… We used to have different vinyl from the kitchen in the mudroom, and it was lower down. Now everything flows from the kitchen into the mudroom and SQUEEEEEEEE! It is so much nicer.
Okay, so obviously I’m still painting in the mudroom. I was not sad to see the ugly pinky/tan/brown color go away. I’m surprised I left it there these last 4 years.
Anyway, that is where things stand right this second. Left to do is:
- Finish painting
- Patch drywall
- Seal floors x 3
- Install subway tile
- Build a shelf/box over the fridge
- Install new IKEA cabinet
- Install butcherblock counter on bar
- Oh yeah, I forgot about the shelves under the cabinets… those, too.
- And some more beadboard on the wall where the bar used to be.
- Install new lights
- And finally… (I think) buy/install a new faucet.
Dude, that’s a long list. I guess we are not as close as I was thinking. Barnacles. I’m hoping to have it all done by October.
