So, last week the subway tile was installed. Saturday we grouted it. It took all day long. As with every home improvement project, the first couple hours were fun. Eight hours later, I was ready to stab somebody. Who was the Bright Light that decided to install 70+ square feet of subway tile in our kitchen?!!! Ahem.
This is how it looked after the tile was completed. ^
And below is after grouting for so long I was ready to throw myself off a high building. I just took this picture 2 minutes ago and I purposely cut out the counter/sink because it is full of dirty dishes and I don’t want to clean them right now.
We still need to caulk between the counter and tile, and there are a couple areas that I need to touch up the grout. And obviously there are areas of moulding that need to be patched in and cabinet doors rehung. But, it looks so good. Even my kids said, “Wow, that tile is so pretty. It makes the kitchen look really nice!”.
I waffled back and forth on whether to do dark grout or white… I love the look of both, and was kind of leaning towards a dark grout. But, then I got worried that the dark grout would look too busy with our checkered floors, so I went with white. I am happy with the white, but I probably would have been happy with the dark, too. I just really like white subway tile. Really, really a lot.
So, this week’s kitchen projects are:
- Install a new faucet
- Install peninsula and new butcher block counter
- Reinstall trim and baseboards
- Install shelves under the cabinets
- Seal the floors
- Touch up paint on walls, cabinets, and the ceiling. I really, really hate painting ceilings.
Unfortunately, our money for the kitchen has run out, so we need to do as much of that list ourselves as we can. I am hopeful that we can get this all wrapped up in the next week or two.
